The 1980s sitcom A Fine Romance, starring Judi Dench and Michael Williams, has been added to ITVX. This news comes just in time for Dench’s 90th birthday.
What is A Fine Romance?
A Fine Romance aired on ITV from 1981 to 1984. Created by Bob Larbey, the series follows the relationship between Laura, a translator, and Mike, a landscape gardener, who meet through a blind date arranged by Laura’s sister. Both are shy, socially awkward, and hesitant to commit, making their romance a humorous and often endearing journey through the ups and downs of mid-life dating. The series ran for 26 episodes over four seasons.
The show starred real-life married couple Judi Dench and Michael Williams as Laura and Mike, alongside Susan Penhaligon as Laura’s sister Helen and Richard Warwick as her husband, Phil.

Jamie’s Reaction
This is a lovely series that helped bring Judi Dench into the mainstream sitcom world, years before As Time Goes By. It’s a tad more theatrical than the aforementioned sitcom, and the leads make it work.
It’s wonderful to see one of Dench’s most fondly remembered TV series available to stream for free in full, just in time for her 90th too.
