BFI to Release Vincent Price Cooking Show on Blu-Ray

The BFI have announced their intention to release a piece of rarely-seen British TV history. Via their list of Blu-Ray and DVD announcements for October and November, they state they will release the full series of Cooking Price-Wise, starring Vincent Price. This release will be part of the BFI’s Flipside series.

What is Cooking Price-Wise

The show was made by Thames Television for ITV in 1971. It featured Price, known for his cast acting career, preparing dishes from around the world. It ran for six episodes. There was a tie-in recipe book released at the time, which has since been reissued. The show, however, has never been issued on physical media.

What the BFI Said…

“As well as being a horror icon, Vincent Price was a renowned gourmet chef, and in 1971 starred in his own 6-part cookery show for ITV called COOKING PRICE-WISE, a brilliantly bizarre crash course in very-1970s cookery that included melon monsters and crocodile cucumbers – and how to make the perfect soufflé. This legendary show has
developed a cult following over the decades but has never been available to buy and is the perfect Christmas gift for fans of the ghoulish (and goulash!).” BFI Press Release

Jamie’s Reaction

There is so much information to take in! I was aware of Vincent prices cooking credentials, but I had no idea he made a series for British television. I have previously seen his appearances on Carson and the Jim Nabors Show, where he demonstrated his love for cooking.

I have to applaud the BFI for planning the release of possibly the strangest yet most intriguing peace of physical Media in 2024. Horror fans will definitely want to catch their hero in an unusual position, but consumers who love vintage cooking shows will also find a place for this. I especially love the plans for the special features, further strengthening it’s appeal.

Cooking Price-Wise Will be available on Blu-Ray in standard definition from the 25th of November 2024
