The BBC will broadcast several surviving episodes of the classic word-based panel show Call My Bluff. This series will be part of a quiz-themed programming block on BBC Four.
About Call My Bluff
Created by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman, the British version of Call My Bluff first premiered on BBC Two in 1965. For the majority of its initial run until 1988, it was hosted by Robert Robinson. It returned in 1994, still hosted by Robertson, but was soon replaced by hosts including Bob Holness and Fiona Bruce.
The show’s format involved two teams, each consisting of three members, who were presented with obscure words. One member of the team would give the correct definition of the word, while the other two provided plausible yet false explanations. The opposing team had to determine which definition was accurate.
Due to the BBC’s archival wiping policies during the time, a number of the early series are missing. The run will begin with an episode from 1974, hosted by Robert Robinson with team captains Frank Muir and Patrick Campbell.
BBC Four’s Quiz Themed Programming
Call My Bluff will be broadcast on Monday nights at 9:00 PM. Following on will be an episode of the antique-themed panel show Going for a Song at 9:30 PM. The rarity of the material being aired means that the duration of this programming block is uncertain.
Jamie’s Reaction
My wife often mentions this show during conversations about what we were watching in the 90s. I recall vague recollections of the show but I don’t think I’ve seen a full episode. However, the BBC’s approach to panel shows has always been enjoyable, so I look forward to it.
I’m sure I’ve noticed repeats of Call My Bluff over the years, but nothing on a regular weekly basis. It will be nice to see clean transfers of these classic panels shows, a world away from the VHS rips that can be found on the internet. Also the various celebrity guests too, their appearances possibly unseen for many years.
Call My Bluff will first air on Monday the 12th of August at 9:00 PM on BBC Four. It will continue weekly at the same time.
