The Academy Award-winning silent movie Wings, starring Clara Bow, has arrived on Paramount Plus in the UK.
Made in 1927, the romantic action-war drama was the first movie to win the Academy Award for best picture at the first ceremony in 1929. It is the only pure silent movie to win the award. The movie starred Clara Bow alongside Charles Rogers, Richard Arlen and (in one of his first roles) Gary Cooper.
Wings is the story of two men who have gone to war and the girl they both leave behind. Director William A. Wellman makes one of his most humanistic statements as he explores the devastating results of war.
Synopsis from Paramount Plus
For those wondering what the image quality may be like: The original negative is lost, but a backup was found some years ago, albeit with a few signs of age and wear. However, the movie received a restoration and subsequent physical release in 2012; Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Paramount. It is this version that is available to stream.
1929’s Wings is now the oldest title available to view on Paramount Plus in the UK, and it is the only silent. As far as our research indicates, the film isn’t available on the service in the USA. It is not yet confirmed whether titles of a similar age will arrive, or if this was a one-off.
Our review of this film will follow shortly.
