This week, an enormous selection of Doctor Who related material dropped on BBC IPlayer to celebrate the British Sci-Fi show’s 60th anniversary. For the first time, a collection of nearly every surviving episode of the classic series is available to stream on the catch-up service.
The series began in 1963, with William Hartnell in the lead role. Over the next twenty-six years, six more actors would take his place. The series was cancelled in 1989, briefly returning for a TV movie in 1996 starring Paul McGann. It was then revived in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the doctor. David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker have all played the title character since then, with Ncuti Gatwa due to take over after a brief second stint from Tennant.
The vast collection of Doctor Who material now available on BBC IPlayer comprises both the classic and modern series plus spin-offs, documentaries and more.
In this article, we shall list classic serials that are part of the collection. This obviously isn’t the complete series, as there are several missing episodes from the early years. One existing serial omitted is the debut An Unearthly Child, which was unable to be licensed. Some of the missing episodes have since been animated using sound from off-air recordings, examples of this will be marked.
There are other instances for the first two doctors where extant episodes from the incomplete series are also included. Here are the serials included in the drop, and the number of episodes available.
