British channel Rewind TV will broadcast the rarely seen British sitcom Don’t Drink the Water, starring Stephen Lewis and Pat Coombs. The series will begin airing from the 18th of April 2025.
What is Don’t Drink the Water?
A spin-off from the hit LWT sitcom On the Buses, Don’t Drink the Water followed Stephen Lewis’ Cyril “Blakey” Blake as he retires from the Luxton & District Traction Company and moves to the Costa Brava in Spain. He lives with his sister Dorothy, played by Pat Coombs. Aside from the two leads, Derek Griffiths appears in all episodes as Carlos.
The series first aired on ITV in 1974, running for 13 episodes over 2 series until 1975. It was produced by London Weekend Television and created by Ronald Chesney and Ronald Wolfe.
What is Rewind TV?
Rewind TV is a British channel on Sky (182) and Freeview (92). It features several classic television shows and movies from around the world. The schedule has included ITC series like Department S and The Prisoner. Other broadcast shows, some of which haven’t been aired for some time, include The Cuckoo Waltz, Worzel Gummidge Down Under, Monkey, and Hancock.
Since its launch, the channel has aired a few sitcoms from the archives of London Weekend Television, including Trouble in Mind and Time After Time. Other LWT productions on the channel have included Dick Turpin and The Charmer.

I love how Rewind TV keeps plucking these rarely seen gems from TV history and making them available on broadcast television once again. The short run of this series is one of the things that has kept it off our screens, I’m glad a channel can see it’s worth.
As a huge fan of On the Buses, I have felt intrigued by this series. Although playing a role that resembled a pantomime villain in nature, I have always felt that Stephen Lewis’ portrayal of Blakey had some heart to it. Moving the character into Stan’s house in the latter series of the original show, helped flesh him out a bit. For it to have run for more than a single series, Don’t Drink the Water must’ve built on that foundation.
