The BBC will broadcast several surviving episodes of the classic antiques-themed panel show Going for a Song. It will be featured in a weekly quiz-themed block on BBC Four.
What is Going for a Song
Going for a Song first aired on BBC One in 1965. Max Robertson presented the show through its original run, which ran for 13 series until 1977. Due to wiping policies at the time, much of the series is missing from the archive. It is unknown how many survive.
The main format consisted of Robertson introducing an antique to a panel of antique experts, valuers and celebrity panellists who would examine the object and give its date and value. The antiques expert would then present its actual age and worth. Arthur Negus served as the resident expert and antique valuer.
Revivals of the show were aired in the 90s and 00s on the BBC. Further hosts included Michael Parkinson, Anne Robinson and Michael Aspel.
BBC Four’s Quiz Themed Block
Each episode of Going for a Song will be broadcast on Monday nights at 9:30PM. It will be preceded by surviving episodes of the 1970s panel game Call My Bluff. Due to the rarity of this material, it is unknown how long the run will last.
Jamie’s Reaction
Oh my! More Arthur Negus content on BBC Four is always welcome! Since the channel broadcast several episodes of the Antiques Roadshow, a few containing Negus, the famed antiques expert has become a regular on the channel. I absolutely devoured the 1970s series The Story of English Furniture, which also got a repeat run recently. I look forward to seeing this rarely-seen piece of BBC history, and hope there is more to come.
Going for a Song will first air on Monday the 12th of August at 9:30pm on BBC Four. It will continue weekly at the same time.
