That’s TV 2, the British archive TV channel, has announced their intention to broadcast the 1980s sitcom Home to Roost, starring John Thaw and Reece Dinsdale.
What is Home to Roost?
Home to Roost, made by Yorkshire Television, originally aired on ITV from 1985 to 1990. Created by Eric Chappell, it follows Henry Willows, a middle-aged man who enjoys living alone until his teenage son Matthew unexpectedly moves back in. The show ran for 29 episodes over 4 series. The show has previously been rerun on Channel 4, ITV3 and Forces TV.
The main cast featured John Thaw and Reece Dinsdale as father and son. Elizabeth Bennett played their housekeeper, Enid, and Joan Blackham played Matthew’s mother, Sue.
The Progression of That’s TV
That’s TV, and its sister channels, have significantly expanded their offerings in recent years. What started with airing just a few classic shows has now evolved into an entire evening’s schedule of British comedies. Other shows in their lineup include Are You Being Served Again, Goodnight Sweetheart, Steptoe and Son, Three Up Two Down, and Benidorm. Rising Damp and Duty Free were also recently added to the schedule.
That’s TV 2 is available to view on Freeview (65), Sky (181) and Freesat (165).
Jamie’s Reaction
I remember Home to Roost being broadcast in reruns, but rarely saw an episode. Perhaps alongside my regular sessions on their channels, I should check out one of John Thaw’s most remembered performances outside of drama.
it’s amazing to see another classic sitcom added to the ever-expanding lineup of That’s TV. I was initially sceptical about whether they could cover three channels with enough different archive content, and they’ve proved my worries were premature. They’re providing a huge smattering of gems which were slowly become lost in the mists of time, wonderful.
