Help Tell the Story of ITV in the South: A New Podcast Seeking Guests

For years, I’ve been passionate about telling the story of Television South (TVS), the ITV franchise that served the South of England from 1982 to 1992. Initially, I planned to write a book, but after deeper research, I realized the sheer complexity of such a project. While I’m grateful for the interest from fellow enthusiasts, I’ve come to the conclusion that I may not be the right person to bring a book to life.

However, I still believe the story of regional ITV in the South needs to be told. That’s why I’m launching a new podcast dedicated to the three major ITV franchise holders in the regionSouthern Television, Television South (TVS), and Meridian. Through interviews with those who worked behind the scenes and in front of the camera, as well as conversations with viewers who remember these companies’ contributions, I hope to capture the legacy of these broadcasters.

With ITV’s 70th anniversary on the horizon, now is the perfect time to highlight the impact of these regional franchises. The South’s contribution to ITV, along with companies in the West Country, often feels overlooked in mainstream media history, despite producing many well-loved and innovative programs.

A Look at the Three ITV South Franchise Holders

Southern Television (1958–1981)

Southern Television was the first ITV franchise for the South of England, serving audiences from 1958 to 1981. It was known for producing iconic programming such as:

  • How (children’s science and educational series)
  • Worzel Gummidge (classic children’s drama starring Jon Pertwee)
  • Out of Town (countryside and outdoor life with Jack Hargreaves)
  • Together (daily soap opera)
  • Day by Day (regional news and current affairs)

Southern had a strong reputation for quality programming. Some of it still gets repeated via Talking Pictures TV.

Television South (TVS) (1982–1992)

Replacing Southern in 1982, TVS took regional broadcasting in a more ambitious direction, producing an impressive slate of entertainment, drama, and factual programming. Some of its best-known shows include:

  • Catchphrase (the classic game show hosted by Roy Walker)
  • Art Attack (beloved children’s art show with Neil Buchanan)
  • C.A.T.S. Eyes (female-led detective drama)
  • No. 73 (Saturday morning kids’ TV with Sandi Toksvig)
  • Coast to Coast (regional news)
  • The Real World (documentary series)
  • That’s Love (Sitcom starring Jimmy Mulville and Diana Hardcastle)

TVS also ventured into international co-productions and built a strong creative presence before losing its franchise in 1992.

Meridian (1993–Present)

Meridian took over in 1993, with a more streamlined approach to regional broadcasting. In recent years, most of its programming has been centralized under ITV. Meridian’s regional presence remains strong through local news on Meridian Tonight and occasional current affairs programming.

I’m looking for former employees of Southern Television, TVS, or Meridian—whether you worked on-screen or behind the scenes. No role is too small; if you were part of the industry in any capacity, I want to hear your story.

I’m also keen to speak with viewers who remember watching programming made by these regional companies, whether locally or through network broadcasts. What shows do you remember? What made these franchises stand out to you?
