Continuing our series of interviews with unsigned and independent acts, we had the opportunity to submit questions to singer-songwriter Katie Ellen.
1) How did you get started in music?
My Dad was in a country band when I was little. I used to sing with them from the moment I could talk. I taught myself to play guitar and later, Piano and the rest is history. I wrote my first song at 15/16 and haven’t stopped writing since!
2) How would you describe your music?
My music and style changes with my mood and where I’m at in my life. Right now its quite soulful and piano based but in the past, I’ve gone done the country route. I feel like folk is a common style that’s always there though.
3) Tell us about your latest release.
‘Yours’, is a special song and came from a very raw/emotional place. It’s the first self recorded piece I’ve released and that makes it even more special. Lyrically, it’s very honest and I wanted to make sure I captured the intensity behind relationships like the one ‘Yours’ tells the story of.
4) What inspires you to write music?
Everything! Mostly relationships but not all romantic. I’ve written about friends, family or even other peoples relationships.
5) How would you describe your live gigs?
They’re quite chilled, with folky vibes. I play originals mostly but love an unusual cover thrown in for good measure.
