Talking Pictures is to broadcast a ‘new’ batch of episodes of Jack Hargreaves’ Out of Town series. The Southern Television series recently completed a first run on the channel, promising further episodes. From July, another batch will run weekly.
Out of Town explored the countryside and rural topics of yesteryear. Jack Hargreaves’ relaxed presentation style was an ideal match for these serene and captivating programs. Looking back, these shows evoke nostalgia, yet they were unsentimental at the time—merely informative and considerate of their subjects. The program aired from 1960 to 1981, with Jack Hargreaves at the helm throughout its run.
The show and its style were so enduring that further programmes in its vein were produced featuring Hargreaves for Channel 4 in the 1980s.
Talking Pictures TV has rerun many programmes from the Southern TV archives during the channel’s lifetime. These include Worzel Gummidge, Runaround, Now For Nookie, Together and Rooms among many others.
