Get ready to have the theme tune stuck in your head for another fifty years, a Cosgrove Hall classic animated production from the 70s is now available to stream!

Jamie and the Magic Torch has arrived on ITVX Premium, with all episodes available for viewing.

What is Jamie and the Magic Torch?

Jamie and the Magic Torch, produced by Cosgrove Hall for Thames Television, debuted in 1977. Spanning three series, it concluded in 1979 after 39 episodes. Brian Truman wrote and narrated each ten-minute episides. The memorable theme tune was the work of Joe Griffiths, with Tony Steven providing the vocals.

Jamie and the Magic Torch follows the Jamie of the title and his dog Wordsworth on adventures. Every night at bedtime they travel down a magical helter-skelter to Cuckoo Land. Characters such as Mr Boo, Jo-Jo, Nutmeg, Officer Gotcha, Strumpers Plunkett, Billi Bundy and Wellibob populate this Land. On these escapades, whenever they get into trouble, Jamie’s Magic Torch saves the day.

In Other Media

Earlier this year, Fabulous Films released the complete series of “Jamie and the Magic Torch” on DVD. This is a release part of a trend where titles from the Thames Kids and Family archive, now owned by Canada’s Boat Rocker Media, are being made available across various platforms. They include The Big Friendly Giant, Wind in the Willows and Count Duckula.

ITVX Premium, which incorporates elements of the former streaming service Britbox, has expanded its library with classic children’s shows for many years. Recent additions include titles like Button Moon and Willo the Wisp. ITVX Premium offers ad-free streaming through either a monthly or annual subscription.

What We think…

Jamie’s Reaction: When I was growing up, I had a couple of episodes of Jamie and the Magic Torch on DVD. I had wanted to see more episodes but they were in short supply. The complete series was not made available in the UK on digital versatile disc until this year. Now not only do I have the choice of physical media, but on streaming as part of a subscription. This has the potential to either affect sales, or bring these “charming” adventures to mainstream attention once again.
