Kindly Spoken Thieves

Continuing our series of written interviews with unsigned and independent artists, we had the opportunity to submit questions to Kindly Spoken Thieves.

How did you form?

Kindly Spoken Thieves are Steve Setzepfandt and Josh Wittman.  We are actually childhood friends who met when we were 5 years old and went to school together through college. We were always interested in music growing up.  I (Josh) have been playing the guitar since grade school, and Steve played the bass.  We have always kept in contact and got our start making music about 13 years ago. We were under a different moniker called Rho from 2006 to 2016. We released 4 albums under Rho on a Creative Commons Net Label called No-Source out of Boston, MA.  We decided to go a bit of a different route as Kindly Spoken Thieves in 2017.

How would you describe your music?

Our music is not your typical electronic music.  We mix some progressive drum beats, vintage synth tones, piano, ambient sections while mixing strong guitar melodies.

Tell us about your latest release…

Our latest and only album as Kindly Spoken Thieves was released on March 30th, 2019 from the label we started called Shady Ridge Records on Bandcamp.  It was written and recorded from 2016 to late 2018. Most of the tracks started off as slower or chilled out versions from what is on the album but soon turned into more of a progressive sound with catchy melody.  The album contains 10 tracks.

What are your gigs like?

We actually do not gig but since writing new material, we have thought about maybe having one of us DJ it out live somewhere. The songs we have recorded for this latest release could be done live as a DJ set.  We are also thinking about writing an electro-acoustic album which we could gig out more easily.

Would you ever consider coming to the UK?

Yes, we’d love to come to the UK. We have many contacts and fellow musicians we keep in touch with there and would love to gig or possibly check out the live electronic scene.  Also, be nice to check it out as a tourist.
