Free streaming service FilmRise has added the 1970s sequel sitcom Make Room for Grandaddy.
What is Make Room for Daddy (and Granddaddy)
Make Room for Daddy was a 1950s American sitcom that ran for 343 episodes over 11 seasons between 1953 and 1964. The name changed to The Danny Thomas Show after season 3. It featured Danny Thomas in the main role alongside Marjorie Lord, Rusty Hamer and Angela Cartwright. The show followed Danny Williams, a nightclub singer balancing his demanding career with the challenges of raising a family.
Make Room for Granddaddy was a follow-up series that aired in 1970 on ABC, running for 24 episodes over one season. The show brought back Danny Thomas, now a grandfather, with Marjorie Lord, Rusty Hamer, and Angela Cartwright reprising their roles. The series focused on the next chapter of Danny’s life as he looked after his six-year-old grandson, played by Michael Hughes.

Jamie’s Reaction
FilmRise is a service I occasionally visit when I’m in the mood for vintage but unique content. Over the years, I have enjoyed a large amount of their content and recently found the 1980s sitcom It’s a Living on the platform.
I didn’t know there was a follow-up to Make Room for Daddy. Personally, I don’t think that Danny Thomas gets the credit he deserves for helping to innovate sitcoms. This production may turn out not be his finest hour, as tends to happen with a TV sequel, but it’s a piece of TV history available for everyone to appraise.
