The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced its upcoming Southbank programme for September and early October 2024. It will begin with a unique selection curated by director Martin Scorsese. Titled “Martin Scorsese Selects: Hidden Gems of British Cinema,” the programme highlights lesser-known favourites from British film history, focusing on titles beyond the established classics.
Originally compiled during the 2020 lockdown, Scorsese’s list was created in collaboration with filmmaker Edgar Wright, who assisted in narrowing down the selections for this special season. This collection showcases classics, hidden gems, and unheralded treasures.
The screenings at BFI Southbank, running from 1 September to 8 October, will include notable films such as “Shooting Stars” (A.V. Bramble, Anthony Asquith, 1928), “Brief Ecstasy” (Edmond T. GrĂ©vill, 1937), “The Man in Grey” (Leslie Arliss, 1943), “It Always Rains on Sunday” (Robert Hamer, 1947), “Mandy” (Alexander Mackendrick, 1952), “Station Six Sahara” (Seth Holt, 1963), and “The Legend of Hell House” (John Hough, 1973).
Many of these films will be shown using 35mm prints sourced from the BFI National Archive, with the screening of “Went the Day Well?” (Alberto Cavalcanti, 1942) featuring a rarely projected nitrate print, providing a rare cinematic experience.
Further events in the upcoming programme include a season dedicated to Maggie Cheung, a selection of stop motion films and more. For extra details, please see BFI.org.uk.
