A Written Interview With Matt Steele & The Corvette Sunset

Continuing our series of written interviews with unsigned and independent acts, we had the opportunity to submit questions to Matt Steele & The Corvette Sunset.

How did you form?

I needed a backing band for some dates to launch my solo debut record, Songs for Catherine Anne (2016). I always liked __Name__ & The __Band___ artist  names like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers or Elvis Costello & The Attractions, and I liked the alliteration of the phrase “corvette sunset”. After a few shows it felt like we had something more than a singer and backing band vibe, so everyone agreed on becoming a band. It’s been a real treat to work with the guys in the band, we’ve developed that electric rock n roll energy I’ve always wanted to have.

How would you describe your music?

A mix of Elvis Costello’s sarcasm and energy, Tom Petty’s craft and showmanship, Ryan Adam’s emotion, and a sprinkling of The Arctic Monkeys.

How did your latest track come about?

Rescue Ship started as my take on Queens of the Stone Age, a sludgy meditation on depression and loneliness. Gradually, we peeled away the distortion until it became this slinky little number, a bit of a come-on while sinking through the depths of despair.

Are you planning any future releases?

Yes! We are currently writing new tunes, but next down the pipe will be a music video for Rescue Ship (check our social media in early March!) and a release of the next single/video off our album “Half Girl Half Ghost” called It Won’t Happen Again later in the spring. For now, you can stream the whole album over at http://song.link/halfgirlhalfghost.

What are your live gigs like?

A white leather jacket peacock strut, Elvis Costello buckled knees, handclaps, laughter, obligatory face melting solo, audience participation; beautiful rock and roll energy.
