In this list, we count down our favourite vintage movies on Paramount Plus in the UK. We realise that there are some glaring omissions (sorry Godfather), but we wanted to highlight some of the lesser known titles made before 1980 that we enjoyed. Non-franchise films are more prominent in our selection.
20: Airplane! (1980) – Some dated humour, but still one of the best spoofs ever.
19: Grease (1978) – Just for the soundtrack and the lead roles of Travolta and Newton-John.
18: Sabrina (1954) – A fabulous RomCom that doesn’t seem like it would work. Bogart and Hepburn match well together.
17: Big Jake (1970) –
16: Alfie (1966) – Caine is sublime in this film.
15: Roman Holiday (1953) – Cute Romantic Comedy that made Audrey Hepburn a star.
14: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
13: The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)
12: The Bad News Bears (1976)
11: Catch-22 (1970) – The ensemble cast are exceptional in this film.
10: Nashville (1975) – Everything about this movie was incredible, and well observed.
09: The Italian Job (1969) – “You’re only supposed to blow” etc etc
08: The Conversation (1974) – A classic
07: Hud (1965) – Hard-hitting yet gentle, one of Paul Newman’s best roles.
06: My Fair Lady (1964) – One of the greatest musicals
05: Ordinary People (1980) – Understated yet beautiful film that won
04: The Odd Couple (1968) – Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are the perfect pairing in this adaptation of the Neil Simon play.
03: True Grit (1969) – It’s the role that finally won Wayne an Oscar. Also features Glen Campbell…
02: Sunset Boulevard (1950) – Gloria Swanson is creepy yet somewhat adorable in this picture.
01: Wings (1927) – A groundbreaking piece of storytelling that set the standard for what was to come. Winner of the first Academy Award for Best Picture.
