British channel Rewind TV will broadcast the classic sitcom Please Sir!, starring John Alderton and Deryck Guyler. The series will begin airing on the first of May, 2025. This news was first subtly teased as part of a compilation of vintage transmission clocks.
What is Please Sir?
A school-based sitcom from London Weekend Television, Please Sir! follows idealistic young teacher Bernard Hedges, played by John Alderton, as he attempts to educate and manage the unruly pupils of class 5C at Fenn Street Secondary Modern School. The cast included Deryck Guyler, Joan Sanderson, Richard Davies and Noel Howlett.
The series first aired on ITV in 1968 and ran for fifty-five episodes over four series until 1972. It was created by John Esmonde and Bob Larbey. There was a feature film spin-off in 1971, and a sequel series, The Fenn Street Gang.
What is Rewind TV?
Rewind TV is a British channel on Sky (182) and Freeview (92). It features several classic television shows and movies from around the world. The schedule has included ITC series like Department S and The Prisoner. Other broadcast shows, some of which haven’t been aired for some time, include The Cuckoo Waltz, Worzel Gummidge Down Under, Monkey, and Hancock.
Since its launch, the channel has aired a few sitcoms from the archives of London Weekend Television, including Trouble in Mind and Time After Time. Other LWT productions on the channel have included Dick Turpin and The Charmer. The channel recently added Don’t Drink the Water and Mapp and Lucia to the schedule.

YES! I have waited many years to see this series repeated on a channel I can receive! Although I’m sure I’ll find it “of its time”, I have always been fascinated to see the role that helped make John Alderton a timeless name in British comedy history, aside from his role as Fireman Sam narrator!
I’m delighted that Rewind TV have kept up the momentum with regards to new programming for their channel. Each new choice has been a surprise, but also not a surprise. Titles such as Please Sir were huge in their day, but have since fallen into obscurity among the mainstream channels. It’s brilliant to see them resurrected for a new generation to discover.
