Classic 1970s children’s animated series Roobarb has been added to Britbox/ITVX Premium.
Roobarb was narrated by Richard Briers and originally aired in 1974. The series consists of thirty 5 minute episodes.
The “Roobarb” of the title is a dog, greenish in colour, with a counterpart pink feline called “Custard”.
The show has a very distinct appearance, as a particular drawing technique known as “boiling” was used by the animators. This makes the images look like they are constantly almost pulsating, adding a lot of life and energy to the images.
Roobarb is remarkable in that it was the first fully animated series ever made in the UK. It was one of a group of programming made for children in the 1970s which appealed to adults as well as its original target audience, in part due to their use of language to create humour.
The 1974 series Roobarb is now streaming on Britbox/ITVX Premium.
