StudioCanal to release Cage of Gold on Blu-Ray

StudioCanal has announced the release of a brand-new 4K restoration of Ealing Studios’ 1950 drama, Cage of Gold, which will be available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital from the 16th of September 2024. It will be part of the company’s Vintage Classics Collection.

What is Cage of Gold?

Cage of Gold was directed by Basil Dearden, and starred Jean Simmons, David Farrar and James Donald. This Ealing Studios production also featured cinematography from Douglas Slocombe. Jean Simmons’ costumes were designed by Frederick Stark for her 21st birthday party and then reused for the film.

Cage of Gold Synopsis

Post-war London; 1950. Judith Moray (Jean Simmons) leaves her fiancé; the kind doctor Alan Kearn (James Donald), when a dashing yet roguish old flame, Bill Glennan (David Farrar), reappears in her life. Before long, Anne is pregnant and a reluctant Bill marries her before abandoning her the very next day when he learns that her father cannot offer him financial support.

Two years later, Jill – having been told that Bill is dead – marries Alan and they raise the child together. But when Bill suddenly re-appears, it can only mean trouble…. Synopsis from StudioCanal

Extra Material

Extra material for this release will include Liz Tregenza on dress designer Frederick Starke, and a behind the scenes stills gallery.

Jamie’s Reaction

I’m always excited when StudioCanal decides to restore one of the Vintage films from the vast collection. I recently had the pleasure of reviewing their release of Three Men in a Boat, which was fantastic. I’m sure this will uphold their excellent reputation.

I haven’t seen this film but I know that Ealing Studios is considered a mark of quality. I anticipate a dark film with moody black and white cinematography, which I’m certain will look stunning in this restoration. It will also be interesting to try and spot some of the outer cast, including Herbert Lom, Bernard Lee and Sam Kydd.

Cage of Gold will be available on Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital from the 16th of September 2024.
