Talking Pictures TV will broadcast the 1960s Gerry Anderson series Supercar as part of its regular Saturday Morning Pictures strand.
What is Supercar?
“This classic Anderson production follows the adventures of Mike Mercury and the test crew at Black Rock Laboratory in the Nevada Desert in 1962, as they test out Supercar, a prototype vehicle capable of traveling on land, can dive underwater, and can fly through the air.” Synopsis from Talking Pictures TV
The science fiction supermarionation series, produced by Gerry Anderson and AP Films (APF) for Associated Television and ITC Entertainment, was first broadcast in 1961. It ran for thirty-nine episodes over two series. This was Gerry Anderson’s first half hour series, and ended in 1962.
The voice cast included Graydon Gould, David Graham, Sylvia Anderson and George Murcell. Murcell’s roles were later voiced by Cyril Shaps
Talking Pictures’ Saturday Morning Pictures
Supercar will be joining the channel’s unique Saturday Morning Pictures strand, a weekly childhood nostalgia trip that has included The Adventures of Robin Hood and Larry the Lamb. The most recent addition to the strand is the Danzingers’ Richard the Lionheart, an ITV broadcast series from 1961.
Jamie’s Reaction
After broadcasting Fireball XL5, Stingray and Thunderbirds, I wondered how long it would take Talking Pictures TV to add another Gerry Anderson to their lineup. I haven’t seen too many episodes of this series, but I’ve been intruiged during my limited exposure.
This is why I love this channel, giving viewers an opportunity to see things that haven’t been broadcast on TV for quite a while. Due to being black and white, I have a feeling this one may have slipped under the radar many times; Making it somewhat an underrated classic.
It is awesome to see it included as part of the Saturday Morning Pictures strand, a slot full of nostalgic programming!
