A classic ITC series has been added to ITV’s streaming service ITVX.
Created by Gerry Anderson, it first aired between 1972 and 1974; Running for 52 episodes over 2 series.
The Protectors follows a group of individuals organised to help and protect innocent people. The leader is Harry Rule, played by Robert Vaughn following his success in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. The Contessa was played by Nyree Dawn Porter, with Tony Anholt as Paul Buchet.
As with many shows of its kind, episodes usually featured guest performers who were either already well-known to audiences, or would go on to be. Names such as Jeremy Brett, Joanna Lumley, George Baker, David Suchet, Eartha Kitt, Judy Parfitt, Patrick Troughton, Hannah Gordon, Peter Vaughan, Peter Firth, Joss Ackland, and many more, appeared in The Protectors as guest actors.
The Protectors were affluent and stylish, with glamorous aesthetics. The clothing and the interior design were plush and colourful. The series looks inviting, like others of its era such as The Persuaders.
The show didn’t have a continuing narrative, but was rather one of those programmes which dealt with a story within the episode, from start to finish. Usually, someone would need protecting or some injustice would need to be put right. The trio of Protectors would go to work, and have the whole matter tied up by the time the credits rolled.
ITVX is home to episodes of many classic ITC series; Including The Saint, The Prisoner and The Persuaders. Other Gerry Anderson series on the platform include Thunderbirds, Fireball XL5, Stingray and Captain Scarlett. We will try and keep you updated of further additions to the catalogue.
