Jamie Dyer discusses Wallace and Gromit’s fourth short film The Wrong Trousers, which first aired on the BBC in 1993.
Wallace and Gromit was created by Nick Park, and featured the voice of Peter Sallis (Last of the Summer Wine) as Wallace in the first five productions; A Grand Day Out (1989), The Wrong Trousers (1993), A Close Shave (1995), Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) and A Matter of Loaf and Death (2008).

So, the second film in the Wallace and Gromit franchise was first released 30 years ago, in fact, in 1993. It was entitled The Wrong Trousers, and it sees, um, Peter Sallis return as Wallace. It’s Gromit’s birthday, and Wallace has got him a couple of presents. A dog lead and collar. Nice. Thanks, Wallace. And, um, a pair of techno trousers.
Yeah. Me neither, but this story basically kicks off when not only have they got these techno trousers, they take in a lodger because they somehow can afford techno trousers, but they can’t afford to pay the bills. They take in this lodger. Uh, which is this penguin, little bit of a shifty fellow, and this film is astonishing, isn’t it?
If you’ve seen it, you know what I mean. That train sequence at the end, uh, the overall Hitchcockian nature. Of it, it won an Academy Award in 1994, and deservedly so, even just for that train sequence at the end. Um, a marvellous thing. Wallace comes across as a little bit weird in it, like, he’s not really that bothered about Gromit until the last, maybe, ten minutes when things start to go a little bit wrong and he’s trapped in those trousers and he’s talking about stopping them It’s like yeah, mate Um, you basically gave him this so that you didn’t have to take him for a walk That seems a little bit off colour.
But um other than that this film Is still a marvel I’ve seen it probably over a dozen times and So many, so many moments, so many moments, possibly the best Wallace and Gromit short for many reasons. Um, I mean, what about when, uh, when he’s on the ceiling with those trousers, when you first see that they’re capable of, um, hanging from the ceiling like that, which then evolves into this thing. The box, the hole in the box thing, where, um, Feathers McGraw looks through, I mean… So many moments in this thing. Yeah, this series is going to be a little bit rambly, uh, because I’ve only got three minutes, and there’s just so much to pack into, um, each episode.
“The wrong trousers, Gromit. It’s the wrong trousers”. Go and see it. It’s on iPlayer. It’s on TV. Um, just go and watch it, will you? Yeah
