British channel Rewind TV will broadcast the 1970s factual series Walking Westward, hosted by Clive Gunnell. No broadcast dates have been revealed yet, but the show has been confirmed as coming in February.
What is Walking Westward?
Walking Westward was produced by Westward Television in the 1970s. It followed Clive Gunnell as he walked the South West coastline, engaging with local residents and exploring the region’s heritage. Gunnell’s films were included in the network’s About Britain strand. While making the journey for the show, Clive Gunnell amassed a large collection of walking sticks, which would become his trademark. The series ended in 1981, following Westward‘s loss of the south-west franchise.
Some of the series has previously been available on DVD.
What is Rewind TV
Rewind TV is a British channel on Sky (190) and Freeview (95). It features several classic television shows and movies from around the world. The schedule has included ITC series including Department S and The Prisoner. Other broadcast shows, some of which haven’t been aired for some time, include The Cuckoo Waltz, Worzel Gummidge Down Under, Monkey and Hancock.
The channel has a history of broadcasting rarely seen programming from the Westward and TSW archives. Previous inclusions have included Drake’s Venture, That’s My Dog, Where There’s a Will and many of Westward’s highly regarded documentaries.

Rewind TV has done it again! I love the channel’s dedication to bringing rarely seen gems from the Westward and TSW archives. It has been a fascinating insight into largely forgotten programming. I have seen several viewer requests for Walking Westward and have been intrigued by its premise.
After experiencing the magic of Jack Hargreaves’ Out of Town on Talking Pictures, this seems like another great example of countryside-led programming from the same era. I look forward to watching Clive Gunnell’s journey.
